"A Light for the Christ Child" Lantern Project

Hundreds of families in Chiltiupan either do not have access to electricity or cannot afford the $5/month electrical bill.  As a result, many do not have sufficient lighting in their home.  For Christmas 2014, our parish raised over $40,000 to purchase over 400 solar LED lanterns for these families as part of our “A Light for the Christ Child Christmas Project.”  These lanterns provide enough light for cooking, reading, doing homework, or saying evening prayers.  In addition, they have a USB port for charging small electronic devices like cell phones.
